Facebook video quality is capped by Facebook, not by your downloader: every clip uploaded to the platform is re-encoded into Facebook's own compressed renditions, and the very best file anyone can retrieve — you, a downloader, or the creator themselves — is that compressed copy, never the original master the creator exported. So when a tool promises 'original quality', the honest reading is 'the best version Facebook is holding', which for most public videos means 720p or 1080p, and only rarely anything higher.
What happens to a video when it's uploaded
The moment an upload finishes, Facebook takes the file and transcodes it. A single upload becomes a whole ladder of renditions — typically 360p, 480p, 720p and, for eligible videos, 1080p or higher — each encoded at a bitrate tuned for streaming rather than archiving. The uploader's file is the input to that process, not something Facebook keeps on hand to serve back to viewers.
Two things get squeezed in the process. Resolution can be reduced if the source is larger than Facebook's ceiling for that post type. More importantly, bitrate is reduced aggressively, because Facebook is optimising for billions of people streaming on mobile data. Bitrate is what carries fine detail, motion and gradients, which is why a re-uploaded clip can be nominally 1080p and still look noticeably softer than the file that went in.
What 'original quality' really means
This is the single biggest misconception about downloading. People assume 'original quality' means the creator's master file — the pristine export from their editing software. It never does. That file lives on the creator's own drive and is not published anywhere. What a downloader can reach is exactly what Facebook's player can reach: the published renditions.
So the realistic best case is a lossless copy of Facebook's best rendition. That's a genuinely good outcome — it means no second round of compression is added — but it is not, and cannot be, the source master. Any service claiming to deliver more than Facebook publishes is either upscaling (which invents detail rather than recovering it) or simply overstating what it does.

- Best / HD — the highest rendition Facebook published for that specific video. For most posts that's 720p; for some it's 1080p. It is not a fixed number, it's 'the top of this video's ladder'.
- High — a middle rendition, often 720p, balancing sharpness against file size. This is where most people should land for offline viewing.
- Standard / SD — a small, fast-loading rendition around 360p or 480p. Fine on a phone screen, visibly soft on a laptop or TV.
- Auto — not a quality at all, but the player switching between renditions based on your connection. It's why the same video can look different on Wi-Fi and on mobile data.
The important consequence: 'Best' on a low-effort phone upload might be 480p, while 'Best' on a well-produced page video might be 1080p. Two videos with the same label can be very different files. Always judge by the resolution number if one is shown, not the adjective.
Why 4K on Facebook is so rare
People search constantly for 4K Facebook downloads and are then disappointed. There are three stacked reasons for that. First, most videos on Facebook were never uploaded in 4K — they were shot and posted from phones through the app, which compresses before upload even happens. Second, Facebook reserves its highest renditions for a subset of content and viewing contexts rather than publishing them for everything. Third, and most relevant to downloading, those top renditions are delivered as adaptive DASH streams with the picture and the sound stored in separate files.
That last point is what turns 4K from rare into impractical. To hand you a working 4K or 1080p MP4, a service has to fetch two separate streams and join them on a server before sending you the result — which means processing your video on someone else's machine. If a tool offers you a big resolution without doing that work, what you'll actually receive is the video track alone, and it will play in complete silence.

FB DownS lists only merged formats — files that already contain both the video and the audio in one container. Facebook already publishes MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, which is the most universally compatible pairing there is — it plays on every phone, laptop, smart TV and editor without conversion. If you genuinely need another format later, convert once, locally, from the untouched original rather than downloading a pre-converted copy.
How to get the best quality available
- Open the video on its own page and copy the link from the Share menu, so you're pointing at the video rather than a feed wrapper.
- Paste it on /facebook-video-download and look at what resolutions are actually listed for that video — the ladder differs from post to post.
- Take the highest merged option offered rather than assuming a number; 720p with audio beats 1080p without it every time.
- Don't convert the file afterwards unless you truly need a different container — each conversion costs quality.
- If you only care about the sound, use /facebook-audio-download instead and skip the video bitrate question entirely.
One last framing that saves a lot of frustration: judge the result against the version playing on Facebook, not against an imagined master. If your download looks the same as the video does in the feed, the tool did its job perfectly — you now hold the best copy that exists outside the creator's hard drive.
